New York City at golden hour is one of the most photographed scenes in the world β and for good reason. The city's iconic skyline, the East River, the grid of Manhattan streets, and hundreds of rooftops all become extraordinary when bathed in warm amber light. If you're in New York with a camera, golden hour is non-negotiable.
The Best Locations for Golden Hour in New York
Brooklyn Bridge Park β Pebble Beach
The classic New York golden hour shot. From Pebble Beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park, you get the Brooklyn Bridge in the foreground, the Manhattan skyline behind it, and the East River catching the orange light below. Face west during evening golden hour. Arrive 30 minutes early β the spot is popular and you'll want to choose your position carefully.
DUMBO β Washington Street
The famous view of the Manhattan Bridge framed perfectly by the buildings on Washington Street in DUMBO. During golden hour the light catches the bridge and the buildings warm up beautifully. This is one of the most Instagrammed spots in New York β arrive early or you'll be waiting in line for the shot.
Top of the Rock
The observation deck at 30 Rockefeller Plaza gives you a 360-degree view of Manhattan, including the iconic view south toward the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center. Golden hour from here is spectacular β the entire city turns amber. Book tickets in advance and time your visit for the hour before sunset.
The High Line
The elevated park on Manhattan's west side offers golden hour views looking east β toward the Midtown skyline with the warm light hitting the glass towers. The combination of the industrial rail structure, the greenery, and the city behind makes for unique compositions. Walk the full length during golden hour and shoot as you go.
Gantry Plaza State Park, Queens
Less crowded than Brooklyn and arguably more dramatic. From Gantry Plaza in Long Island City, you face west directly toward the Midtown Manhattan skyline. The old industrial gantries in the foreground add unique visual interest, and the East River reflects the golden light beautifully. The view of the UN Building and the Chrysler Building from here is outstanding.
π Manhattanhenge β New York's Most Spectacular Golden Hour
Twice a year β in late May and mid-July β the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's street grid, flooding cross streets from river to river with golden light. It happens for about 15 minutes. The cross streets with the best views are 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th. Check exact dates for the current year β it's the most dramatic golden hour New York ever sees.
New York Golden Hour Tips
- Check air quality. New York's air quality varies, and a hazy day can either amplify golden colors beautifully or create a muddy, flat look. Some haze is good. Heavy pollution haze is not.
- Use a longer focal length. A 70-200mm lens compresses the distance between you and the skyline, making the buildings appear closer and larger relative to your foreground.
- The Hudson River for morning golden hour. If you shoot morning golden hour, head to the Hudson River side of Manhattan β the light comes from the east and hits the New Jersey skyline and the river beautifully.
- Stay for blue hour. New York at blue hour β with every building lit, the rivers reflecting the city, and the sky deep blue β is one of the greatest cityscape scenes on Earth. Never leave at sunset.
